Primary school orientation

We attended Yiu Yiu’s primary school orientation on Friday.  Parents and students were assembled in the hall at 8.30am and the orientation started with the children being lined up according to their classes.

The afternoon supervisor proceeded to give the briefing in Mandarin, before the children were ushered out to their respective class, and a tour of the school compound.  Parents continued staying in the hall for further briefing by the headmaster, mainly on their fundraising initiatives and the excellent track record in co-curricular activities.

Parents were then asked to go to the respective classes to settle the school fees and complete other formalities.  When I reached the classroom, Yiu Yiu said she was ravenous (she only had some milk and we skipped breakfast as we were running late) so hubby took her to the canteen while I completed the formalities.

I joined them in the canteen later and we also decided to sign up for the food catering program offered by the canteen, coz I really doubt Yiu Yiu can go to the washroom, queue for food and finish her food within a span of 20 minutes during recess.  I find the catering rather costly at RM50/month (I was told other schools charge between RM30-RM35), but the range of food is good with over 20 items on rotational basis.  Will try it out for two months and see how it goes.  My only worry is wastage – whether Yiu Yiu will actually finish, or even consume the food.

Overall, Yiu Yiu was OK throughout the orientation (as do most children, I suppose since most, if not all, had attended at least two years of kindergarten).  Hopefully she’ll settle in well when school starts on January 4.

Hi, I am way behind in my blog posts... still have to round up my Bangkok holiday posts, then the New Year and orientation posts, plus some other here and there... good to see YY made some new friends already. Vic has two friends she already know in her class... phew!

Irene - I've been on leave since the 3rd week of December, that's why I've been keeping up with the posts :-) Once I go back to work, I'll sure slacken again.

Vic has two friends in her class? That's great! Are they from kindy?

Little Lamb - there are quite many of her kindy-mates in the same school, but none in the same class as her :-(

The girls she were playing with are from the class next door, one of whom is her kindy-mate.

WK - not sure can or not, coz they go to the hall below the canteen for their catered food.

Qiqi's school charges only Rm30 like that. It comes with a plate of noodle, and one yogurt drink. Good bargain hor....i catered too for qiqi intially and then found out she did not go to collect her food after a few days (because she was busy following her friends around). Good that the canteen man gave me a refund IN FULL some more! Haha...

Wow, she's in Std 1! Thought both our kids were the same age?

You seem so calm as you faced this major milestone :) I think I'll be all teary-eyed LOL

Yiu Yiu is really good at making friends. She looks like she's having a fun time at school!

Happy New Year to you!!!

Cynthia - looks can be deceiving, haha! She remains the tiniest student in her class, just like her three years in kindy :-(

HW - guess Evan doesn't need uniform, eh? :-) All the best to you in your homeschooling - I wished I had your courage!

Chinnee - yeah, this is the most expensive I've came across. No choice la, give it a try for two months (we had to pay for two months, and no refund leh). I'm half thinking that YY may not eat also, but I really cannot imagine her queueing up to buy food and jostling with soooooo many other students whom are bigger in size.

Kit - I thought so too! Wasn't Lucas born in 2005? Calm eh? I surprise myself too! I guess it's reassuring seeing her having no problems adapting in school, but then again, may be too early to tell! Touch wood!
