First foray into baking buns

A mixer that steams food…
A food processor that makes ice-cream…
A rice cooker that kneads dough…
A weighing scale that minces meat…
A juicer that cooks soup…
Any many more.

What am I raving about? For cooking aficionados, you would know that I’m talking about this magic kitchen appliance, the Thermomix. I attended a 2.5 hour cooking demonstration recently and within that short span of time, with two Thermomix machines, they prepared lemonade, moist chocolate cake, multi-grain mantou, chicken charsiew bun, cauliflower and broccoli soup, rendang chicken, steamed rice, steamed egg, steamed brinjal and mango sorbet. Indeed an amazingly versatile machine.

If you are wondering, I didn’t succumb to the temptation, simply because I already own most of the appliances that makes up the Thermomix, especially a bread machine that also cooks and roasts.  And since I don’t cook that much, it would be an investment with pretty low returns.

Anyway, that demonstration rejuvenated my interest with my bread machine so last weekend, I wiped the cobweb off my bread machine and set out to make some buns.  It was an easy process of placing all the ingredients in the machine and letting it knead for 20 minutes, before leaving the dough to rise to twice its size.  Then I manually kneaded for a while before dividing the dough into smaller portions and filled them up with curry chicken and sausages, and let it rise again.

Off into the oven they go, and 12 minutes later, the aroma of freshly baked buns wafted through my kitchen.  The buns turned out really well, and I have my week’s supply of breakfast.  It was a satisfying experience, and I’m game for more.

Back to the Thermomix – do I really need it? No, I don’t. Do I want it? Yes I do. If only it’s not that expensive.

How much is the Thermomix? I saw it once on the net, but the lady who demonstrated it seemed to have a little problem getting the gears out and putting them back in. Bad start. But I heard rave reviews about the miracles that come out of this machine. I'm eyeing the Alpha Juicer by Newlife. It is a single gear masticating juicer, which can also make pasta / noodles, grind, mince, make sorbet and other stuff. RM16xx with membership, ok kah?

I'm wanting to buy a bread machine for sometime, but too lazy to do a reseach. What brand is yours, and given another chance, will you buy the same brand and model again?

ya...too expensive for me too. A bread maker would be good enough if you have one. I do not even have it, hehe...

Chanel - no la. I don't cook as often to warrant such an expensive investment.

Irene - it was RM5,200 then, but they had a price increase recently so it's now RM5,900. The Alpha Juicer sounds like a good investment also.

WK - just given you your share.

Boey Joey - mine is iSmart maker, but it's not sold at retail outlets. They will come and demo and sell through word of mouth. I find it ok - can do other things besides kneading dough and easy to clean too.

Chinnee - go get one if you like bread/buns. I've been making buns for breakfast and for Yiu Yiu to bring to school for recess.

Ya, the high price of Thermomix puts me off too and I'm a bit worried I don't have the patience / time to clean / fiddle with different parts.

How much is your breadmaker? I'm looking for one now esp. one that can knead and make loaves and buns. Would you recommend yours?

Kit - I heard it's not that difficult to clean the Thermomix. There's even an autoclean function :-)

I'm happy with mine. It costs about RM800 two years ago. It's not just a bread machine but can also cook, roast and bake. If you want a simple bread maker, there are a number of brands in the market - not sure which one is good though.

I really like the sounds of your breadmaker esp since it roasts too! And much cheaper than the Thermomix...
