Back from Hong Kong

I’m back, after being away for almost 2 weeks. Hubby joined me after my meeting ended last Saturday, and we spent few days exploring Hong Kong and Macau. We arrived on Thursday night on flight MH363 from Macau, and this was the view from the rear end of the plane.

I’ve never flown on such an empty flight before. There were only 12 passengers, so the plane actually took off with less than 10% of its capacity. Is it any wonder that MAS keeps losing money year after year?

When we got back home, I was greeted by this rude shock!

The broken zipper

Small items and toiletries bags dumped into this plastic bag, which originally contained only several pieces of wet clothing

Visible smudges/dirt on the contents of my bag

I didn’t suspect anything amiss when I saw my luggage shrink wrapped at the conveyor belt. The upper handle of my luggage was broken so I thought they must have shrink wrapped it in case I lodge a false complaint against them for damaging the handle. So it didn’t occur to us to open up the bag to check while at the airport. Since we didn’t lodge any report while at the airport, I had to call MAS to lodge a complaint. And that turned out to be another extremely frustrating affair. I called the toll free number close to 10 times, and each time, I was put on hold until the line got cut off after waiting for 20 minutes. I finally got to speak to someone who asked me to email them with my details and photos of the damaged bag in order for them to assess if it’s a valid case…DUH!

Anyway, Friday was spent unpacking, laundering and cleaning up the house, which was extremely dusty due to renovation works next door. There are still lots of things to be done – sorting out the photos, updating my blog, and of course, catching up on blog reading, which would keep me very very busy for the next few days. And of course, spending time with my precious, whom I’ve not seen for almost two weeks.

Gosh, that's really torn out! I've had such experience too ... Hence no more buying cute, trendy, or expensive luggage bag from then on :)

i wonder if the phone call is enough? maybe you ought to follow it up with an email or fax or letter sent by registered mail. on one of my trips to geneva, my bag came back with the front pocket torn, as though it was dragged along a rough road with a force strong enough to create a hole through samsonite's tough material. i got a replacement bag from singapore airlines a few weeks later, also samsonite.

airport handling are getting from bad to worst! Even when you stuck that 'Fragile' sticker, the way they handle the bag is no difference with all the rest.

wow the plane very empty huh. My flight was packed on the 1st one, but the ones after were 1/3 or 1/4 full most of the time.

How annoying! If they rifle through your things, at least they shouldn't leave marks!

next time when you face this problem, go straight and complain at the airport. Once you are outta there, difficult to claim back things. They happily will refund you in cash for the damage bag. And on MAS, I have 3 flights that was canccelled by them this month. The worst is Beijing as they ask me to travel either one day earlier or one day later. The rest 2 flights was either postpone later or earlier. I called and complaint and they blame it on economy. So I told them I know economy bad. Since that is the case you don't tell ppl you have so many flight la. Just cut down on the number of trips. You make yourself convenient but we are the one in trouble. And she go, "but at least we replace you with a flight wat." Piang leh!

HN - this is not the first time I had problems with MAS handling of my luggage :-(

Mimi - when I called, they asked me to send an email with details and photos of the bag. Your incidence was with SQ, which I think should be more responsive than the so called Malaysian Hospitality.

Angeleyes - don't think they even bother.

Jazz - I've had several luggage incidences with MAS before, not never as bad as this.

Asianmommy - I'm not sure if it was accidental, or on purpose to rifle through my things, coz it was shrink wrapped properly when I collected the bag from the conveyor belt.

Hijackqueen - I didn't suspect anything amiss when I saw my shrink-wrapped bag at the conveyor belt. Otherwise, I would have went straight to complain. Only realised the damaged zipper when I cut away the wrapper at home.

Little prince's mommy - until now, I couldn't figure out whether it was deliberate or accidental.
