DSLR at last

We have been contemplating on getting a DSLR camera for some time but kept putting it off. Hubby, however, was quite determined to get one before the baby arrives, so he can capture nicer photos of the baby. Coincidentally, one of his friend was also looking and they decided to buy together, just so they could get a better deal from the dealer.

So last Thursday, he came home with this:

Since we are both newbies with DSLR, we figured we’ll stick to the EF-S18-55mm kit lens for the time being, until we are more familiar with the functionality of the camera. Perhaps we’ll consider getting other lenses once we become better acquainted with photography.

I’ve not have time to plough through the manual to learn how to use the camera but I have to get to get to it pretty soon. I also hope to attend the photography classes offered by Canon for their DSLR buyers. In the meantime, perhaps some of the expert photographer mummies out there can give me a tutorial? :-)

Welcome to the world of SLR photography. Too bad it's not a Nikon ;) No matter... Not too long ago, I endeavoured to set up a blog for photography newbies who don't know where to start with their new DSLR cameras. Thus photographynewbie.blogspot.com was born. I wanted it to chronicle my journey as a photography newbie and at the same time, pass on whatever knowledge I pick up along the way. Unfortunately, I started getting 2nd thoughts after the 3rd entry. I felt that people might find my entries too simple and/or a complete waste of time. And besides, I thought, I'm an amateur -- what business do I have writing such things? So that was the end of that blog. Anyway, what I've written there still holds true: 1-read the manual so you'll know what each button is for, 2-learn how to hold your camera properly, 3-learn how to focus manually. From that point on, I'd say try shooting using Aperture mode, using the same inanimate object, changing the settings slowly to see the difference. Lots of great material on the net. I've got links to several of them in my blog roll. Good luck!

You should get 500D wor. The latest model has got video in it and of course with latest technology la. Anyway, welcome on board!

Hijackqueen - we were actually considering 500D too but decided against it coz we thought since both of us are DSLR idiots, we may not need such a high-tech camera. Now that you mention it, haiya, feel a little regret for not getting 500D tim...

A Mom's Diary, may i know how much u bought the DSLR camera? I was thinking of buying one sometime back but didn't do much survey at the market.

Jotpl - I think it's about RM2500, with 8MB memory card and tripod thrown in.

I want, I want! Seems like a lot of people are going for Canon vs Nikon. I like the idea that they give photography classes.

Hmm...RM2500 is a good price ya? I think the Nikon D2 (?), the apple of my eye, was retailing at RM4K+ previously.

Hubby recently asked me about my unclaimed 'motherhood' present - I've already got 2 cameras and was thinking an iPhone would be less damaging. But then a DSLR would mean so much more to me (and my work)!

Seelah...you've tempted me already LOL Enjoyyyyyyy

Kittycat - I think there's the diehard Nikon supporters and then there's the diehard Canon supporters...haha...just like MU vs Liverpool.

We didn't want to get such a high-end one coz we will probably end up not using most of the functions, being the DSLR-idiots that we are.

Should claim your 'motherhood' present from your hubby, otherwise next time he won't offer :-) I still have my two (one old and the other relatively new) compact digital camera too, but just can't resist the DSLR.
